Time dilation

Time dilation is the phenomenon whereby an observer finds that another's clock, which is physically identical to their own, is ticking at a slower rate as measured by their own clock. This is often interpreted as time "slowing down" for the other clock, but that is only true in the context of the observer's frame of reference.”

This is now a proven theory, proposed by the great, Sir Albert Einstein. One can find many great reads on this topic on the web. We, however, will discuss this phenomenon in more daily life relevance and the bizarre fashion it titillates us and drives us crazy.

Unless, some of us are amazing day dreamers, we are faced with this phenomenon day in and day out in our daily lives.

Every now and then.. intensity of restlessness of wait turns the ticks of clock into the water droplets crashing onto the forehead, driving us insane, like some Chinese Water Torture scene out of a horror movie.

In comparison to Einstein’s theory, we will interpret our own clock as the clock of our brain, which presumes that “this” much time has passed, while the time passed in the real clock is lesser. While Einstein gives “special relativity” as the reason for this phenomenon, we give “wait” as our reason.

Clicking of the shoes, tapping of the fingers, staring the same painting, useless page flipping of magazine… nothing helps… u glance at the clock and you shriek in your heart with a gasp, “what!!! Only 5 mins have passed, it feels like ages to me!”

This all happens while we are waiting. Wait has been one of the favorite subjects of writers and poets alike. Countless poems and plays have been written on it. One of the most interesting one of those is “waiting for Godot” by Samuel Beckett. Time just doesn’t seem to pass. Waiting is mostly a bad experience, because there is generally some sort of anxiety or apprehension associated with it.

Waiting for interview: how will it go?
Waiting for lover: He is so late! I hope we don’t get caught.
Waiting for office to close: Ah! I am bored.
Waiting for result: I hope I did well.
Waiting for review: I hope my boss hates me a bit less than I think he does.
Waiting for the dentist: Will it hurt?
Waiting the fast to break: Me Hungry

When we talk about waiting, waiting rooms and places is the first thing which comes to mind along with the misery of the wait. Hospitals, offices, gardens, restaurants, … they come in all shapes and sizes.

One of my favorite comedians, Jerry Seinfeld, had the following monologue on waiting and specifically waiting rooms in one of his episodes.

JERRY: Waiting room. I hate when they make you wait in the room. 'Cause it says "Waiting room." There's no chance of not waiting, 'cause they call it the waiting room, they're going to use it. They've got it. It's all set up for you to wait. And you sit there, you know, and you've got your little magazine. You pretend you're reading it, but you're really looking at the other people. You know, you're thinking about them things like "I wonder what he's got. As soon as she goes, I'm getting her magazine." And then, they finally call you and it's a very exciting moment. They finally call you, and you stand up and you kinda look around at the other people in the room. "Well, I guess I've been chosen. I'll see you all later.”

So, how to fight this whole dilemma of time dilation? Lessening the misery of wait and improving the feel of the waiting room.

Practice your cool, calm and sexy look: While under pressure and under stress, it’s the hardest thing to achieve. So the next time you wait, try and work on that.
Read a book: If you are one of those who are always complaining that you never have time to read, well.. this wait slot is that time for you.
Cross the next level: If you were never able to go above a certain difficulty level in some hand held video game, this is your big chance.
Observe people: this is a good time to awaken the psychologist inside you and observe people’s behaviors around you.
Take up writing: Like how I am doing right now.
Plan a murder: If you have been wanting to murder someone for quite some time, now is a good time to work out a plan and give a through thought to the finer details
Solve a riddle: Take along a riddle you always wanted to solve. If you feel brave enough, also ask the hottest looking girl/guy to help you do it.

If you are still unable to do any of the above mentioned things, then I would suggest, at least stop biting your nails while you wait.

Happy waiting!

Ashes fall, as the smoke begins to thin

No shouts, no sound, no scream

But its black, empty and fragile

Stay away, stay away!!

For it will leave its color on you

all will turn black, whether it was white or red or blue

it hurts, it cuts, it bleeds, it kills!!

When the pandemonium stops

I am alone, with lamentation

Why can't I forget you!!

“People don’t care what we do, as much as we think they do”

In my post title, “Be Free”, I talked about how we are all our very own prisoners. Being a prisoner myself, I felt what I wrote, needs to be taken a bit further. I have been able to achieve few things over the time, but there is much more that needs to be done.

So, what’s the worst fear that is stopping us? In my opinion, that is “letting go of the norm.”

We become so used to giving people the sort of behavior that they always expect from us that we fear that if we will diverge from our normal expected behaviors and routine, people will have a strong reaction. Sometimes, we, in our minds, build up that people around us really care what we do. People do care what we do, but not to the extent we think they do! Fine, there are few lines we dare not cross because we know it will have strong repercussions, however, many other times, there are things which affect only us, matters to only us, yet we are scared to break our norms, thinking, “what people might think?”

So, the foremost thing which we need to realize is, “People don’t care what we do, as much as we think they do”. We need to get down from our high pedestal and realize that not every action of ours is important to the rest of world as much as it is important to us. We are not that important.

So realize what’s important to you, break free and “Let go of the norm”.

Be Free!

Have you ever felt that you are a prisoner of your own self made prison?

I feel that all the time. That I, The Black Scorpion, in my sound mind and healthy body, accept, that I am, my very own prisoner.

A lot of times, it’s not our society, our religion or our parents who are stopping us to do some thing. It’s just our very own brain which defines our limitations. All of us have our preconceived notions of what we think we are able and not able to do. A lot times, we do not attempt or try some thing, just because we think we cannot.

That is, our prison!

That is what we all need to break free from!

Our brain limits us and confines us into our self fabricated imaginary walls. These walls can be made of many things; our fears, our laziness, our circumstances,… anything!

We are scared! We are scared of change, we are scared to work hard, we are scared to just let ourselves go free and plunge into some thing. Its not that we do not long for freedom… freedom to do some thing that we always wanted to. It’s just that we are not willing to open the door and walk out of the walls that we created ourselves.

How can we do that? Well.. from my very own "vast experience", its just a matter of forgetting all “what ifs” and taking the “First Step”. That’s what it all takes. Take the first step and you will be pulled further by your passion for the rest of the way to achieve that thing.

So.. BE FREE! And JUST DO IT!

Fiery eyes, wind swept hair
Tempestuous high inside
Wild with craving
I feel it all!
Taste it all!
Twisted lips
Narrowed eyes
I….
The slumbering beast
Patiently waiting….
to be unleashed!
I feel alive again!

Murder! Murder! Murder!

It was around 11:15 on Sunday, 21st June 2009, eyes of the whole nation were glued to the television screen as Pakistan lifted Twenty 20 World Cup 2009 Trophy. It will be remembered as one of the most glorious days in the history of Pakistan. However, it’s sad that no one would remember the tragedy which struck at the same time as the result of that victory.

Cricket is not just a sport for the people of Pakistan. It’s some thing that they thrive on spiritually. Being a part of a country where people cannot afford even the basic necessities of life, cricket is but their most beloved source of recreation and pride. However, our nation has a tendency to take every thing overboard. Same is with the expression of happiness. Therefore, right at the same moment as the trophy was lifted the streets of Karachi were filled with the echoes of massive aerial firing which lasted about half an hour. For many families, this converted the happy moment in to the most tragic moment of their lives. Following is the result of that aerial firing as reported by The News:

"Four people, including three minors, were killed after unidentified miscreants resorted to aerial firing in different parts of the city following the Pakistani cricket team victory in the Twenty20 World Cup in London."

Many people do not understand that how aerial firing can result in killings. Here is a little explanation for them:

"Researchers report that a bullet fired into the air can climb two miles into the air and remain in flight for more than a minute. As it falls, the bullet reaches a velocity of 300 to 700 feet per second. A velocity of only 200 feet per second is sufficient to penetrate the human skull."

Knowingly firing when one knows what it could result in, can easily qualify it as murder in first degree.

THIS MUST END!
We need to behave as responsible citizens. We need to realize that our actions have consequences.

Year after year, so many lives are lost from stray bullets, yet our government has not done enough to stop this monstrous celebration ritual. Sindh police has taken some measures like organizers of any event where aerial firing takes place could be charged. Also, citizens have been urged to call Madadgar-15 or a nearby police station about firing incidents on such occasions. So you too as a citizen can take some action.

A more successful campaign was run last year by LA police department to reduce the deaths by stray bullets on the New Years Eve. Its details can be found on LAPD blog:

We need to create more awareness about this issue and make people realize that "WHAT GOES UP WILL COME DOWN."

Peace out!

Live Responsibly!
