From homemade wooden skies to Olympics

Amidst all the depressing news of bomb blasts, killings, inflation... relating to Pakistan, the following news came as a breath of fresh air:

Winter Olympics are in full swing in Vancouver, Canada. Every night, thousands of viewers in Pakistan and millions in the world are glued to their screens watching the exciting Winter Olympics games in the beautiful mountains and stadiums of Vancouver.

We belong to a country where very few areas get snow each year for a very small time and winter games are almost non-existent . Therefore, it came as a wonderful surprise that Pakistan is competing in skiing in Winter Olympics this year.

Therefore, mark your calenders my friends and stay glued to your televisions tonight to catch the glimpse of first Pakistani, Mohammad Abbas, to ski down the slopes of Alpines competing for the very first time in Winter Olympics.

Mohammad Abbas is a fairy tale story of how passion and struggle of one man and determination of another can make them a reason of pride for the entire country. He was discovered by Farooq while he was posted to Naltar in 1999. He would see Abbas and his friends chop off some wood, chisel it, make it into thin bits to look like skis and they would tie it to their feet with rubber or nylon rope and ski down. There, they held trials and picked 16 boys. They gave them skies and boots, and started training them and sending them to small championships.

While there are many odds against these boys, there is a small slope in Pakistan that is only 500 meters long and the vertical drop is only about 80 to 100 meters, plus the training time they get due to lack of snow is only about 8 weeks per year. They don't have any professional coaches, managers or ski technicians, they only have Farooq and his commitment to the cause. In addition to this Abbas will be 96th in 103 starters in Olympics. Never the less, their passion and commitment have brought them this far and we hope it would take them all the way to glory.

We pray things would be even better til it will be time for next Winter Olympics. Farooq has done a commendable job and he even aims higher that by next Olympics, he aims at sending a woman from Pakistan as well.

Our prayers, well wishes and support is with Mohammad Abbas as we will see him ski down the slopes of Alpine in Pakistan's suit tonight and with Farooq for his mission and his cause.
