4D Show in Karachi

Yes Ladies and Gentlemen.. It exists! I didn't believe it too until I saw and experienced the show in person.

Sindbad Park in Karachi has a tiny 4D show cinema. It has a capacity of 22 people. The cinema is nice and clean. Currently, they are showing a 25 minutes animation by the name of "Museum of Horrors" which is inspired by Night in Museum concept. The seats are comfy, view is great from any seat and the seats keep moving, tingling and water is sprayed at multiple points of the movie. It was a wonderful experience!

I would recommend you all to view the show with your families. The ticket per person is merely Rs. 100 and its totally worth it.

Have fun all!

What are we afraid of?

I remember, not too many years ago, when I was a kid, there existed a concept of penfriends. The idea was to have long distance friends belonging to different cultures, beliefs or countries. It was looked upon as a learning activity for personal development. It increased person's view of looking at the world and being more broad minded, understanding and patient in accepting the cultures, beliefs and ideas which were different than his own.

Nowadays, phobia, hatred and intolerance has increased multifolds. Adults are so obsessed by the ideas and misconceptions of they being the most superior race and are busy indulging in hating other cultures, views and beliefs and they are imparting the same teachings to their kids. This can be observed by overhearing the conversation between any two kids. You would hear them saying that, " we are the best and those those people are so dirty and so bad etc etc. " The seeds of hatred and phobia is so deep rooted in our veins that i see that even people who are living abroad do not mingle with people of other cultures and beliefs and only move in their own community circles and wear their religion and culture upon their sleeves with a superiority complex.

What are we afraid of? Why are we suffering from this superiority complex? This phobia? Why have we started believing in these divisions? Why have we lost faith in humanity? Equality of all humans? and ability of humans to bond with each other on a simple relation of being human? Is it not enough that we are all humans and share a common home called mother earth?

The answer to this is that it is enough and IT SHOULD BE ENOUGH! We need to break free from these divisions and value another human being, his ideas, his beliefs for whatever they may be and respect him and his beliefs, culture and value, no matter how much our own opinions and ideas differ from his. We need to get rid of our superiority complex. We need to respect everyone and accept them as who they are. We need to cultivate love and respect in our kids heart for everyone. Its time for us to let the light shine!

My message is love and peace for all!

Lost Conversations

10:14 PM Posted by Black Scorpion 0 comments
You would commonly hear people saying that the life styles have greatly changed. We are all so short on time, no one has time for any one else.

I would agree that life style has indeed changed and I would mainly attribute this change in lifestyle to working hours that are demanded at job. While all the other responsibilities of ours have remained the same, the working hours which are demanded at work have increased multifolds and that too of a normal working class and not some businessman. So now, all the time that people have left after work, they are busy in their daily chores and family engagements and in turn do not have time for any one else.

One perceives a  certain type of relationship which would have a certain amount of time that a person would get with another person but that does not happen. Everyday, a person has million things which one is looking forward to talk about with his beloved, million things that one has marked he would do with his beloved but all those conversations are lost some where along the way as the schedule of continuous busyness stretches from days to weeks, weeks to months and then ultimately months to years.

The communication is one avenue that modern science has made great advancements in, but the opportunity to communicate with the one u want to communicate with has reduced to almost negligible.

What can be done? I don't know. I have lost hope now. I just feel perhaps we would just need to  be complacent about it and learn to accept it, as otherwise, it gives us nothing but self inflicted depression and anger. Its hard to deal with but never the less, this is the reality of the matter, which cannot be changed, at least for now.

These years too shall pass, million conversations will be lost. I can still imagine! I will find my lost conversations, in my dreams.

Clash of Perception & Reality

We all have perception of how things would be and then we have the reality which stares in our face. This results in the collision of our two worlds, our perception and the reality. Sometimes, to withstand the reality, we try to blur the lines between whats real and whats imaginary. We try to create our new perception of things. It can be a little less ambitious than our earlier perception. We try to create a new world around us by blurring those two lines. We allow ourselves to do thing by losing ourselves in beautiful things around us like music and visuals, and imagine our selves relishing in our own created worlds and dream and dwell in them to with stand the reality.

The backbone of how this system works is our imagination, which allows us to escape the clash of of our perception and the reality which stares at us. The gift of imagination is perhaps the greatest gift that God Almighty has bestowed upon us. Some lose themselves in what "could have been" would have felt like, some take refuge in religion imagining how it would be like to stroll in the beautiful gardens of heaven with beauty all around them, others imagine themselves in a whole different setting where they have created escapes by dwelling into imaginations created inspired from beautiful things around them.
We, the human race, have been wired to survive. Man is capable of surviving through the worse of worse and still smile. We survive by hoping, hope which is basically imagination of what would be and what could be. We create new perceptions about future, about ourselves, about our surrounding. Our imaginations keep us going. There is a famous that saying that "All is lost, when hope is lost." However, what I say is, "All is lost, when we stop to imagine!"

2nd Life

If I had a 2nd life, what would it have been?

One of my friends, Altamash, said, "I know now, that the greatest joy in this life, is art." I have reached such an age with enough experiences under my belt that I understood what he meant. Though perhaps that line would have a much deeper meaning in my life at perhaps in my later years and even now I feel this line and understand it.

Had I have had a 2nd life, I would perhaps only spend that indulging myself in listening to classical music, looking at beautiful paintings, photographs, watching movies..  instead of laboring away in my mundane day to day job and catering to my house hold responsibilities.

Though I am one of those lucky few who has lived a small part of their 2nd life in reality but still, there is much unwatched, unheared and unread and a lot which is ununderstood.

Someday perhaps, I would have enough sensitivity and understanding that I would create something beautiful myself which brings joy to others, allowing them to relish in some old memory or drown them in some beautiful fantasy!

Lovers' Sanity

What can be labeled as sane and what can be labeled as insane? Is there an absolute for it? One man's reality is another man's insanity. Is there a proof of what one man claims he sees which we cannot see, in reality, does not exist, just because we cannot see it? Do we really have a right to declare that person insane just because we cannot see what he sees or we cannot feel what he feels. We cannot! We try and pacify the other by saying that what he sees does not exist, so that by believing that perhaps what he is seeing does not exist may make his reality little more bearable. But who are we to say on absolute grounds that his illusion is not real and ours is. Perhaps we are living in an illusion of what he sees or feels does not exist and his view of reality is what the reality is really like. Who knows!

A similar turn of events happens when two people fall miserably in love. The perception of what is right, sane and reasonable changes. They are seen doing things which may be classified by the rest of the world as insane or unreasonable but to them it is the most reasonable and sane action. Like.. wanting to be lost in the jungle for days, wanting to stay in some one's arms forever, stare at some one while they sleep etc etc. They see themselves on one side and every one else on the other end of the world. They feel they share some thing which no one else can understand or feel at that particular moment.

It is the moments of that lovers' sanity and normal man's insanity which makes falling in love all worth while. No matter how bad a heart break one suffers after that, one is willing to go through all that pain just to share that temporary high of lovers' sanity with his lover.

The loss of love really starts to become apparent between two people or how we say the fire starts dying when one of the two may start to think that the idea the other one is presenting is silly, unreasonable or just insane. If one starts to fall out of lovers' sanity that is when one of the lovers starts becoming worried. Cos that is when the idea of whats sane and whats not between two people starts to change. The idea of sanity is some thing which they no longer share. What tied them together is no longer there.

That feeling of lovers sanity is so high amazing and beautiful that one would put all on stake just to feel the same way again, even if that is only for a moment.

Dedicated to Mr. S and Ms. A! Who are about to get married in February, May their lovers' sanity prevail!

This is definitely nostalGIK :D

Computerized Passports eh?

Recently, I had the pleasure of arriving at Jinnah Terminal Karachi from an international flight. As I reached the passport control section. I saw really long lines there. Six flights had reached the airport all at once and it was jam packed. As we waited in the lines, we realized that the line is moving very slowly...

Now, we all know that Pakistan Government has introduced computerized passports. On all the international airports, they just swap our computerized passport through passport reading machine and all our information is loaded in their computers. While on Karachi airport, they were manually feeding the information from the passport and searching against it. That is why it was taking so long. Whats the use of having computerized passport if they are not utilized like how they are meant to be.

Fools Graden: Lemon Tree

Friday, October 1, 2010 6:07 AM Posted by Black Scorpion 0 comments
Ratings: 4.5/5

Switching between the radio stations while driving to work this morning, some thing familiar and beetle-ish caught my ear and I stopped to listen carefully. Ah! what a surprise! It was a major chart topper from the nineties "Lemon Tree" by Fools Garden.

Fools Garden is a German band formed in 1991.This band is popular for covering classic rock n roll songs in their live concerts. They take such inspiration from British classic rock that cover versions of The Beetle's Songs "Cry Baby Cry" and "Martha My Dear" are found in their studio rock album.

The song "Lemon Tree" was a part of the third album  "Dish of the Day" of this band released in 1995. It became a major international hit in 1996. The single reached number 26 in the UK charts and remained at number one for several weeks in Germany. It also reached number one on Ireland charts.

First thing that a person notices is that the beat and style of the song is very Beetlish. So, from the first few beats, it instantly creates a soft corner in our hearts because of our love for The Beetles style. However, the band has its own unique style and flavor to it which sets it apart from the epic band Beetles.

It has those pauses and hang moments which just puts you in wonder  along with the singer and then catchy beats come after the pauses which syncs you wonderfully right back to reality. Musically speaking, it has classic indie rock guitar style with raw feel to it. With lovability created for the guy whose story is being told in the song by singing sweet musical sounds like..

pap!.. teebi tapi taba ti pop pop!

Lyrically speaking, it is a widely discussed song on the internet because of many symbolic references and abstract open endings in the lines.

In the very first line, the singer describes the situation of the character that he is sitting in his room waiting and its a rainy day. Rainy day is commonly used interchangeably for a difficult day. The singer goes on to say that he is waiting for some change or some thing to happen which would help him to get out of his difficult situation.

In the second phrase, the singer says that he is driving too fast towards something and he wants to change his point of view. The meaning of this part as understood by me is though he has a fast moving life where it seems that he has time for nothing, but still he feels that his life has no meaning and no direction. He goes on to say that he is lonely and he is waiting for you. You as per my opinion, he is referring to his lover than some sort of hope or change. Change which he talked about earlier was associated with his lover.

The irony of the songs hits us in the third stanza, where the poet says that his lover showed him dreams of good days and good times which is referred here by, " Blue Blue Sky". However, things did not go as she described him and he is in tough bad times which is signified here by "Yellow Lemon Tree". Lemons are sour and these are sour times  for him, however ,the color yellow of the tree perhaps still shows some hope for him. He is lost and trying to get out of this messy situation.

The singer says that he misses his power, power to do as he please. He knows that rainy days would present him with heavy showers and in his heart he is becoming ready to face all his fears and all his problems. However, he is still scared at the moment and he has apprehensions and that is signified by the heavy clouds in his head. He does not have the will to face all that at the moment and want to just shut his eyes from it all. That is signified by putting himself into bed. Where he realizes that "nothing ever happens" and his bad situation doesn't change to any better.

He finally accepts and realizes that this isolation and wait for his lover's love and attention is not good for him. Musically speaking as well, this point in the song is the turning point and a wonderful change in tempo and holds the heart of the this song.

He says that he is breaking free from this sadness and gonna find joy, he says its a desert to signify that its empty at the moment but he will sooner or later find another toy, which I believe he is talking about  finding another lover and things will start happening for him and turning for him and his ex- lover will see that he can be happy without her and he is no longer waiting for her love and attention.

It is a story of love lost and man's feelings through his depression and wait and his hope motivation in the end to find love again and  be happy again. The lead vocalist has sung this song wonderfully and it has defined the character and emotion of the man in his current situation.

Its a wonderful song which ends at a wonderful note. I have presented this song to you with my  own interpretation, but that is the beauty of good poetry  that every one interprets it as per their feelings and understanding. I hope you would all give a good listen to this song and find your own interpretation of it.

Musically and  lyrically, it is a superior song and the singing quality of the vocalist makes this an excellent listening.

I long..

As the big and small arms both slowly move towards the number 12, I realize that another day has come to an end. Every day is the same... busy, monotonous and dreary with few laughs and warm moments. As the midnight hour seems to be approaching, all I can think about is going into my room and spending some lone exclusive time. The only person if he wishes to share it me, I would be glad to have him, would be my husband. Once, back in my college days, a friend of mine once said, "you must give some time to yourself or else you would go insane". At that time, i didn't realize the importance of what he said. But now, when there is such dearth of "my time" I know exactly what he was talking about.

The concept of mine own personal time is so important. Even if that lone time is just spent staring into the tv aimlessly. It just feel good and completely owned without any distractions and thoughts of other things and people. One feels this sense of freedom, which cannot be felt in the presence of anyone else, no matter if you doing some thing of your own choice. The feeling that noone is watching or observing us, is just liberating.

Perhaps, it maybe because I had much freedom of spending my own time at my own disposal back at my house or perhaps it was because I lived alone for a long time, but I do need my own time. I miss my own time.

My time with my man, my own lone time, which he can share with me. He is my obsession. I can spend hours just staring at him and touching him, just to convince myself that he is real. That is a quality my time spending as well.

All the time, there is just so much going on and so much that we have to do and deliver that one just wants to press the pause button in life, step out into my time and then after that small break, get back in to this race called life. Just nab and grab all what you can get before this time too may be taken away from you for any reason.

RAMAZAN & EID: As We Grow Older

It seems like yesterday when my mom would wake me up for sehr and we would excitedly eat every thing thats on the table, never having to think twice whether this would make me fatter or not. Then coming back excitedly after school and mom would say that for kids, there is only half day fast and we would think it all true and eat our hearts out at 1pm in the afternoon. That was the time when we would happily sleep til iftar and would get up just half an hour before just to see what yummy things are being cooked.

We would so excitedly wait for one day before eid so we could go spot the moon with our dada jaan on the roof top and our only worry was to make sure that our clothes was all set for the next morning and we would happily go to sleep, being too excited for the next day.

Eid was the most awesome day of the year when we would get up early in the morning, take a shower, and quickly dress up before the men of the house come back for prayers. As soon as we were ready, we would stand waiting on one toe cos we knew when they will come, we will get eidee. All day long our only worries were to eat swaiyan, collect lots of eidee and then plan how we would spend it. We would get to meet a lotta relatives and be pampered. Thats how wonderful ramazan and eid was.

Now, it all seems like a long lost dream. Ramazan now means that we would be getting up early in the morning to make sehri, then go labour away in the office and come back and start making iftar and dinner. This doesn't end here. Then, one has to keep serving tea to everyone. IN total getting 4 hours of sleep every day and feeling extremely exhausted. A day before eid, now means, lots and lots of cooking for next day and cleaning the whole house. Sleeping late to work mainly.

Eid is no better too. You wake up really early, and start laboring away in the kitchen once more. Wearing new clothes or giving eidee is the last of your worries as first you are exhausted by serving one guest, then another and then another. Its a never ending cycle til the very late night with extensive tea drinking sessions to which we have to cater too. And ofcourse, washing tons of dishes. In the end in spite of all this, one still hears complains from family whom we had to visit and didn't.

Earlier it was a three day vacation with party, now its three day of extreme labour.

Ah.. Eid! I want it all back. :( I hate growing up!

For my darling..

night after night, i feel your warmth beside me
and close my eyes in peace that surrounds me
morning after morning i wake up by your side
and find you sleeping by me like a little child
Day after day, i hug you and close my eyes
In your warm embrace, i bury my sighs
Its your voice i always long to hear
Its your face i always wish to cheer
I am glad for every day
I am glad for your every way
I know only this is true
It could have only been you

You start counting the Ticks

You know you have tons of work but you just can't make yourself open the relevant documents. After every five minutes you check the time. It just doesn't seems to pass. You don't feel like browsing or checking your email. Every thing just loses its taste and you feel like a zombie.

We work, work and work! We slave away our lives.. morning evening.. then again morning evening and another one and another one! office work at day time house work at night, family work on weekends. Then a time comes when you just say... ENOUGH! I need to get out of this vicious cycle and let the time pass by without me counting the ticks. When the day turns to night and i don't even feel it. Where I don't have to think that now I have to do this and then that.

Bottom line... I am burnt out! I need to break free! I need a Vacation!

Paramore: The Only Exception

12:26 AM Posted by Black Scorpion 0 comments
Rating: 3.5/5

Sometimes, you diverge from your usual taste and find some thing which just hit a chord within you. Such a song is "The Only Exception" by an American Rock band Paramore. Since its inception in 2004, this band has come a long way with many accolades under their belt now.

The lead singer Hayley Williams has strong solid vocals with a lot of depth which makes this track a true treat. She also writes the songs in the band, therefore perhaps its no surprise that she sings the songs with such emotion as she probably understands the meaning behind them.

The song is written in first person perspective of a girl who grew up with parents who were unlucky in love which resulted her not believing in love. However, her ideologies collapse when she meets a guy and is forced to make an exception. This song also talks about how the girl is not completely blinded by love but she remains in tune with the reality that how love is not an emotion which could be held onto to forever with one person, and how things won't last and this too won't last forever. The ending of the song is beautiful and speaks in favor of the phrase from Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem In Memoriam:27

'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.

Williams sings the song with true sincerity and emotion and the listener could feel the resonance of her voice even after the song ends and loses himself in images of his own similar endeavors.

Musically, this song is not very superior and thats why it loses 1 whole point on my rating criteria.

This song is highly recommended for listening.

We Learn!

Thursday, May 20, 2010 11:50 PM Posted by Black Scorpion 0 comments
As the time passes and we are stuck in this vicious circle called life and its mundaneties, our dreams and aspirations whither away and we learn to be complacent for cumulative order and to achieve an average happiness.

Average happiness is happiness when most people are happy and cumulative order is when most people can do what they planned to do. The whole problem of the matter is that happiness is an associative property. For one to be truly happy the people around him should be happy as well. Otherwise, its just not worth it. Thats why one learns to be complacent to attain some level of average happiness in his environment.

Only thing constant in this world is change. However, one never knows that whether the graph of happiness when change occurs would go upward or downward. When one feels that its going downward, I guess one can keep a hope that it will soon start going back up in positive direction. Also, most sadly, whenever one's graph starts taking a downward turn, a simple look around us, makes us realize that our happiness position in graph still quite up in absolute terms when compared to lows other people's graph has touched. Not a day passes by, that one does not realize how lucky and blessed one is.

With every passing day, we are only getting older, we can no longer be hard headed, selfish, brash and insensitive as we used to be. All our actions and words and even smallest of our expressions have consequences and people around us are effected by them. We have to be more responsible. We have to strive for a higher notch on average happiness rather than our own.

After all.. we must realize that people around us who love us most dearly are trying to do the same. Raise the average happiness value that is. :)

So.. we learn!

Cirque Du Soleil - Waiting Lobby Experience

Quote:
"
Cirque du Soleil
, is a Canadian entertainment company, self-described as a "dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment."

O (pronounced the same way as eau (French for water) is a Cirque du Soleil show. It has been in permanent residence at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States, since October 1998. "O" is Cirque's first aquatic show, which features underwater acts such as synchronized swimming as well as above-ground acts.

Since this is a water based show, every member of the cast is SCUBA-certified. The costumes have a lifespan of 20 shows, with multiple costumes per performer costing about $10,000 to produce. In order for the platform stage to rise and fall without a wake, the surface of the stage has thousands of tiny holes.

"

However, this blog entry does not talk about the amazing O show but rather it showcases the amazing sculptures showcased in the waiting lobby of O at Bellagio. These are exclusive pieces, most of them for sale, showcasing body in motion figures from different Cirque Du Soleil Shows. They are Amazing! You won't get to see them any where else!

ENJOY!

Crash Course on designers for a Black Scorpion

3:10 AM Posted by Black Scorpion 0 comments
Recently, a friend of mine Dazza was visiting the Holy Land of Karachi. Her bro in law will be getting married soon and she was hunting for clothes for the occasion. She was always the type who thought too much about clothes but now being married into a fashion forward family, she cares much much more than before. She wants the most latest and hip thing in the market.

So, here was poor little me, who does not give a second thought about herself and during the three days that I took her out shopping, and sat for hours googling, doing my extensive research on designers, their outlets, their prices, their trends.. I got my crash course on the designers of Pakistan.

So what did I learn...

  • Every tom dick and harry calls himself a designer
  • They are Damn pricey for Nothing.
  • Just because they are charging more does not mean they would also give you good quality and service. (Replications of dresses looked better than the actual dresses in terms of quality.)
  • Not every one sucks.

So what makes a designer, A GOOD DESIGNER?

  • Sense of color: I saw many clothes designed in multiple colors but most of them did not look pretty, in fact a lot of them looked cheap. Good ones were the ones, which took care of the color wheel rules and experimented with uncommon colors.
  • Cuts: This I believe is the deciding factor. If you wanna spend money on a designer then spend it on him/her for cuts. Artisans of Pakistan are amazing, a common person with a little sense of color and style can make a nice dress but cuts is some thing which not every person can do. Most of the designers in Pakistan do not rely on cuts but they rely on just embroideries and the band wagon of whats in. Like nowadays, while walking inside the designer studios it feels as if one is walking in the valley of kaghan. So nothing out of the box or original where every thing is borrowed and not even improvised upon from NWFP style of clothing.

So who would I pay to wear?
If ever, I would have a change of mind and clothes become that important to me that I throw my money like crazy to wear designers. I guess I would like to wear Asifa and Nabeel:

http://desihunter.blogspot.com/2010/02/lahore-fashion-week-2010-asifa-nabeels.html

Why?

Cos cuts and colors are so amazing that I can't figure out how the dress is designed.

Brothers in Arms

Thursday, April 22, 2010 3:11 AM Posted by Black Scorpion 0 comments
Humans are known to find and get attracted towards their own kind.. same color, same religion, clan, etc etc .. but a new set of experiments showed how sperms (little guys which comes outta male organs) can also find their brothers and get attached to them. Check the following picture out before I give you the interesting details:

Yup.. these are sperms stuck together. So first the terms:

Brothers: Sperms belonging to same male

(Yup! Thats the only term you need to understand.)

So what did scientist do?

  • They took set of rats.
  • Dyed their sperms in different colors to glow under UV light (now dying sperm is an interesting topic in it self which we will explore some other time).
  • Placed different sets of sperms of different males in different combination in the petri dish along with an egg.
  • Observed what they did.
Sperm's Common Goal:

  • To get to the egg as soon as possible and be the best love machine

Results:

  • Sperms from different males when placed together found their brothers, got stuck to them and then draft, Lance Armstrong-style, moving faster than they could alone thanks to more "engine" power from the cluster.
  • However, when they reach the egg, they again become sworn enemies like before.
  • When they were placed in the petri dish with out their brothers, they found their closest cousins and did the same as above.
Why is it cool?

  • Sperms are so smart man! There is more to them than what we gave them credit for.
  • Genetic Algorithms: These rules can also be applied to genetic algorithms and see how they perform.
  • Quoted: "The results support the long-held view that competition drives the evolution of sperm behavior".

Experiment's Limitations:
  • Not sure if human sperms behave the same. May be they are smarter, maybe they are dumber
  • The experiment was done in a petri dish, not sure if they will behave the same in the womb
  • Quote: "the study examines just one promiscuous and one monogamous species." So again, it does not imply that all mammal's little guys are this smart.

So who did this shit?

Evolutionary geneticist at Harvard University's Hoekstra Laboratory.

Where can you read more on this shit?

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/04/100421-glowing-sperm-brothers-cooperation-evolution/

Ain't it some cool shit?

Lack of Reading Habit

If you are wired like me, who hates to read a LOT of stuff. Then I can understand the plight that you face . Every now and then, some thing is sent to me which is suppose to have instructions about what IS to be done and what IS NOT to be done. Yet I make a general assumption about what this might contain and go ahead with my Stupid self doing stuff which I am not suppose to do or not doing stuff which I am suppose to do.

Any ways.. we better learn to keep our eyes open.

A Serene Sunset

This picture was taken while hiking in Griffith Park, Los Angeles. This picture was taken almost a year back in my Lazy Crazy Days break. In the initial shot i took of this sunset, the ring was behind the tree but much more pink. By the time I ran to the next hill, the pink was little lesser and I was able to capture much more edge of semi-circle than as compared to my earlier shot(my camera lens is not that wide actually). So the only thing I had to compromise on is pink in the sky, how ever I like the composition better here. I increased the contrast a bit before posting picture. The rest of the stuff is untouched. Hope you guys like it. :)

Fashion and Animal Products

Thursday, April 8, 2010 10:38 PM Posted by Black Scorpion 1 comments
While there is no harm in adopting "Natural" theme for one's collection, however, fashion should stay separate from animal products. Therefore, it was disappointing to see the following picture in the coverage of Pakistan Fashion week by Fashion designer Fahad Hussain:

Showcasing such fashions and styles creates a demand of animal products and in turn endangers their existence. Fashion industry of Pakistan has come a long way in fashion and gotten it self accepted as a high potential industry. Therefore, our fashion designers should also act more responsibly now that they and their work is more in lime light. The responsibility also falls on media to abstain from highlighting such fashions or highlight them negatively.

Live Responsibly!
Peace Out!

Karo Mumkin - a good initiative by Telenor

Tuesday, April 6, 2010 10:59 PM Posted by Black Scorpion 0 comments
Pakistan's telecoms industry is a cutthroat competitive industry where all the service providers not only have to step up their game in terms of services and quality but also their marketing and publicity strategy at regular periods for survival. Marketing and publicity comprises of a huge chunk of the company's investment.

Though its not uncommon for multinationals to indulge in community service projects as part of their marketing campaign. However, even if it is a marketing and publicity gimmick, then I would say its a gimmick with a good cause and output. Therefore, it came as a great pleasure to see the initiative taken by Telenor Pakistan in form of their "Karo Mumkin" campaign. It not only serves the purpose of their marketing campaign but also provides a platform for some great ideas to surface.

The Karo Mumkin provokes you to think that, "How do we perceive the Pakistan of the future?"

They give some very good ideas themselves first like..

"How a university chancellor made it compulsory for every student to teach at least 6 months in a village to earn his degree, this was then adopted by every university and now in the future, every Pakistani is literate."

In another advertisement, a doctor is saying,

"I will take out one hour every day from my schedule and go to some small locality and tend to patients for free"
implying how it made the health care more available to every person, in the Pakistan of the future.

These are indeed simple and good ideas and can be actually implemented and make a difference.

Then, they urge us to come up with ideas of our own and implement them, by their tag line:

"Apnay andar, kuch kar deekhainay ki ahliet ko pehchano, aur phir kar dikhaoo"
"Realize the potential do some thing inside yourself and then, just do it!".
(I might be a bad translator.)

Ideas can be submitted via following methods:
SMS/Call: 576 (Telenor users) | CALL: 0345-555-5540 (Other networks)
Telenor Karo Mumkin page: http://www.telenor.com.pk/karomumkin/

Though this might not be a very novel idea, however, it is a very well executed idea. It provokes us to think by giving ideas and then provides platform for brain storming and giving our own ideas. They say in the end, that the best ideas will be chosen, however they do not tell exactly what will be done with the chosen ones. As in, will they be funded, or what? There is no implementation strategy outlined by them.

Some one pointed out on their blog that this a rip off following Pepsi campaign:

http://www.refresheverything.com/

However, they are funding the ideas, wonder what Telenor has up its sleeve. Never the less, if nothing else, at least it provides a plat form for good ideas and it provokes people to think what part they can play for the betterment of this country. After all, it is our country, and we must all work hard to make it better for every one.

When did Mr. X become a certified "Social Activist"?

Thursday, April 1, 2010 12:29 AM Posted by Black Scorpion 0 comments
Just recently, at a dinner, someone while introducing his friends added, "They are also social activists". For some reason this small piece added to their introduction intrigued me enough that I wanted to explore that when can you reach a point where you can start labeling yourself as a "Social Activist".

So first and foremost, like all people, I turned towards Wikipedia. It defines social activism as following:

"Social Activism, in a general sense, can be described as intentional action to bring about social change."

So, following the above definition, Social Activist can be defined as an agent who brings about the social change. However, what is change and how or what sort of change does a social activist brings about needs to be explored in more detail.

Change can be defined as anything becoming different than what it is. Please, do note: "different", and not better or worse, but, different. There is a famous saying that, "The only thing constant is Change". Change is inevitable, it will come whether we like it or not.

Social activist strive to be the catalyst of change to steer the society in the direction they feel is fit for it. Every person has his/her own perception of a Utopian society. It can range anything from "Society consisting of only one religious belief" to "a society where every man has access to World Wide Web and unlimited access to knowledge". Every person's Utopia is based upon his/her beliefs and ideas and longings. So, social activists are those who put their ideas into action to convert their dream of Utopian society to reality?

If all sorts of people striving for all sorts of Utopian society will be labeled as social activist, it could be quite a detrimental definition and qualification of it for society. Although common sense understands, and considers the above deduction of the definition of social activist to be a logical fallacy of faulty generalization (by reaching an inductive generalization based on insufficient evidence) yet, unfortunately, the reality is very much in line with this definition due to the absence of mutual agreement on what is "Absolute Good" for the society. Therefore, historically, all sorts of personalities have been characterized and certified as "Social Activists". We have social activists ranging from the likes of Mother Teresa to Che Guevara. To elaborate further on this, at this point, I would like to introduce the explanation of the word activism as described in Wikipedia,

"The word "activism" is often used synonymously with protest or dissent, but activism can stem from any number of political orientations and take a wide range of forms from writing letters to newspapers or politicians, political campaigning, boycotts , rallies, street marches, strikes, stoppages hunger strikes, or even guerrilla tactics."

This term covers quite a huge ground. One website says that there are two challenges that a Social Activist needs to overcome,

• To encourage community people to take self-determined actions, and
• To avoid harassment and obstruction by the more powerful who may feel threatened.

So… what sort of actions and for what sort of causes? In my opinion, reforms, resulting from the social activism of a social activist which lessens the sufferings of the oppressed of the society, may only be qualified as positive social changes. Hence, those actions which are performed by a so-called social activist following his/her fantasies of what could be a Utopian society, do not hold much weight if they are not helping any oppressed.

Loosely speaking, every person in his own right is to some extent a social activist striving for a change in society. However, the term should not be thrown around lightly while labeling people in such a manner. Only those people whose actions have brought about that change in society which has lessened the sufferings of the abused and tormented on a huge level truly deserve to be labeled and certified as Social Activist. Then, and only then, the society should certify that Mr. X has indeed become a "Social Activist".

Song 2 - Blur - Wooooohoooooooooo!!!

Wooooooooohooooooooooo!!!

From the moment Go! You can't help closing your eyes (Unless you are driving) and banging your head to this song. On top of this, it is so tightly knit with FIFA world cup and computer game that at least all the fans of the most followed sport in the world have banged their heads and bobbed their bodies with this song. This is the ultimate feel good song ever.

This song is by Blur, an English alternative rock bank. It has numerous hits to its credit since its inception in 1989 but perhaps Song 2 is the most popular of them all. The song if one reads its lyrics perhaps focuses on post breakup love hate feeling. However, the song has a great universal appeal for everyone.

So keep banging your head and listen to Song 2 by blur.. WOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

(500) days of Summer - A movie about love rather than a love story

Sunday, March 28, 2010 11:16 PM Posted by Black Scorpion 5 comments
Rating: 4/5

As avid movie watchers, very rarely do we come across movies which tell stories about love rather than a love story. One of these is "(500) days of Summer" released in the Aug 2009 world wide. The story is written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, it is produced by Mark Waters and directed by Marc Webb.

The movie is a third person non-linear narrative of a young man Tom(Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who falls in love with a woman named Summer(Zooey Deschanel), who coming from a broken family does not believe in love. From the very start of the movie, the viewers are warned that, "This is not a love story". This sets the pace of the movie as it skips back and forth from where Tom meets Summer to where he is handling his breakup with her. As the movie progresses, the viewers can't help developing a hope for Tom as their relationship slowly progresses emotionally and physically and at the same time they can't help empathize with protagonist Tom as he tries to come to terms with the breakup.

Without revealing the ending to my readers I would like to point out few things about the movie. First and foremost what stands out is the style of the story telling. Third person nonlinear story telling is not a new idea, however, whats novel, unique and gripping about this movie is the retro feel to it. What mainly creates this feel is beautiful post production work and music which compliments it at every point in the movie. The pace of the movie is slow enough to keep the mellow feeling inside the viewer alive and fast enough to keep the viewer interested.

What adds to the retro look is the get up of lead characters. Tom is all grown up from his "3rd Rock from the Sun" days and his physique has matured enough to showcase fitted casual suits making his look just right for young enough handsome man who looks vulnerable to whatever life throws at him. Similarly, the Summers lives up to the character's name with starry eyes, tiny mouth and bangs; and tiny waist showcased by sixties style dresses and pant shirts. While watching her in the movie, one can't help thinking about Sean Young from Blade runner. She has the same looks and same hot cold feeling to her.

Zooey Deschanel & Sean Young

Interestingly, the male lead keeps reminding us of Heath Ledger. He has that same lovable feel to him as Heath Ledger.

Heath Ledger & Joseph Gordon Levitt

Secondly, acting by the lead actors is quite good. Joseph Gordon-Levitt always stood out in 3rd Rock from the Sun in terms of his acting. However, being all grown up, the range of emotions that he conveyed to the viewers through this movie without even uttering many words is huge. He truely stands out in the movie. Similarly, acting by Zooey Deschanel is also pretty good. She perfectly fitted herself into the character description of being warm enough to be empathized with and cold enough to be thought of as heartless.

Lastly, its the story line, the beauty of the movie is that it focuses on the emotions that people go through, their happiness, their ego, their hurt, and the whole range of emotions when they fall into and through love. Everyone who has suffered heartache after a very good relationship should definitely watch the movie. Its nails in the idea how when two people who are really happy together, may or may not find their endings together because one of them may not feel the "this is it" factor. It makes you understand how this is a perfectly normal emotion and help you realize that how the person who may leave in the end may not be actually at fault as we blame them to be. As in spite of all their interest and emotion, they might not feel that this relationship is "it" and strive for its success or progress to the next level. Yet they may find that feeling with some one else.

For all the above reasons and more, this movie is highly recommended to be watched.

"Paul Blart: MALL COP" - Finally! A Family Comedy!

Rating: 3.5/5

How many of us in Pakistan face the problem of what to watch with the family?

I think pretty much all of us.

Once upon a time, there were, urdu plays which finished in an hour without too many commercials.. but that was then, but now..

All we have left are...

English Movies- Unexpected SNL
English drama - can't watch too many murder mysteries cos my mom in law is squeamish.
Urdu Dramas - Way too many commercials
Indian Movies - Expected SNL
or even worse
tabsaray!

So what are we left with? yes.. I watch National Geographic, Discovery or sports with family. THATS ALL!

However, yesterday, after a long long time, I caught a movie on HBO called, "Paul Blart: MALL COP" starring Kevin James from "The King of Queens" Fame. While his acting was not that different from how he acts in the show, however, the movie was extremely funny and made me laugh out loud at regular intervals. The movie revolves around a mall cop, who in spite of his boring job description believe he is doing a very important job. His skill and commitment is put to test when a co-worker puts into action his plan to rob the mall and take his daughter and the girl he likes as hostages. The interesting and funny way, he foils robber's plans and shine in the end, makes it a very good comedy watch. Its not what he does, its how he does it!

As a comedy movie, this is perhaps the movie I watched after "What happens in Vegas" which actually made me laugh out loud. Whats even better about it is that I could actually watch it with my family. I only needed to censor a kiss and a scene where he is being beaten up, so that was a good change.

Maybe what I wrote is wrong cos I watched it on HBO, a channel which censors movies so much that one becomes miserable. So, in that case, I am sorry in advance if your mom screams, "What kinda cheap movie is this!" after you pop it in your DVD player. Ha ha.. Other wise, for good laughs.. I give it 3.5 outta 5. :)

quotable quote!

Tasty Food is the key to happy life!

From homemade wooden skies to Olympics

Amidst all the depressing news of bomb blasts, killings, inflation... relating to Pakistan, the following news came as a breath of fresh air:

Winter Olympics are in full swing in Vancouver, Canada. Every night, thousands of viewers in Pakistan and millions in the world are glued to their screens watching the exciting Winter Olympics games in the beautiful mountains and stadiums of Vancouver.

We belong to a country where very few areas get snow each year for a very small time and winter games are almost non-existent . Therefore, it came as a wonderful surprise that Pakistan is competing in skiing in Winter Olympics this year.

Therefore, mark your calenders my friends and stay glued to your televisions tonight to catch the glimpse of first Pakistani, Mohammad Abbas, to ski down the slopes of Alpines competing for the very first time in Winter Olympics.

Mohammad Abbas is a fairy tale story of how passion and struggle of one man and determination of another can make them a reason of pride for the entire country. He was discovered by Farooq while he was posted to Naltar in 1999. He would see Abbas and his friends chop off some wood, chisel it, make it into thin bits to look like skis and they would tie it to their feet with rubber or nylon rope and ski down. There, they held trials and picked 16 boys. They gave them skies and boots, and started training them and sending them to small championships.

While there are many odds against these boys, there is a small slope in Pakistan that is only 500 meters long and the vertical drop is only about 80 to 100 meters, plus the training time they get due to lack of snow is only about 8 weeks per year. They don't have any professional coaches, managers or ski technicians, they only have Farooq and his commitment to the cause. In addition to this Abbas will be 96th in 103 starters in Olympics. Never the less, their passion and commitment have brought them this far and we hope it would take them all the way to glory.

We pray things would be even better til it will be time for next Winter Olympics. Farooq has done a commendable job and he even aims higher that by next Olympics, he aims at sending a woman from Pakistan as well.

Our prayers, well wishes and support is with Mohammad Abbas as we will see him ski down the slopes of Alpine in Pakistan's suit tonight and with Farooq for his mission and his cause.

9:34 PM Posted by Black Scorpion 1 comments
Almost half way to my office, i realized there is some thing wrong. I don't feel how I feel usually when i am driving to work. Some thing is amiss!

Did I forget my cell phone? No
Did I forget my glasses? No
Did I forget my lunch? nopes.. its right here

Then.. hmmm... HOLY SHIIT!!!!!!! I forgot to brush my teeeth!
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! how on earth did i manage to do that! i just don't get it. what do i do? my mouth tastes weird.

I called my man, "Hello, baby.. can you plz drop my trust brush and tooth paste on your way to my office?"

baby: "uh! what! why?!"

so i explained him..

So he went psychological with me, " No honey you did!"
Me: "I did?How come?"

Baby: "see! I saw you go into the wash room. YOu must have. I am sure you are mistaken now"
Me: " I did.. really? acha", I said, keeping in mind my hopelessly bad memory

Baby: "Yeah! Yeah! I am sure you did"

Me: "did you see me doing it?"

Baby: "You were doing some thing."
Me: "Did you see me actually doing tooth brush?"
Baby: "No... but.."
Me: " then how are you sure?"
Baby:"err..actually the thing is.. Sorry honey.. i am really getting late, can't you instead buy it from some shop?"

Me: "uh.. ok. Have a wonderful day!" :) ...my man, i thought with a smile on my face, being all love filled for my man and thinking about all the logics he gives. hehe :D

stopped at a pump on my way over but there was no shop there. ah well... :D

First time ever i forgot to brush my teeth. I must be getting really old. Now I am sitting in my office and chewing on a sandwich. Ah well... What can be done! :D

Karachi Bombings

On the 5th of Febuary, two blast ripped through the city of Karachi, one on the bus carrying mourners commemorating the martyr doom of Hazrat Imam Hussain and the second after a little while at the emergency ward of Jinnah Hospital, causing almost 50 casualties and leaving numerous injured and crippled.

In Jinnah hospital, a family visiting a relative who just had a newly born baby, lost 6 members of the family in the blast. The blast also left one 8 year old girl of the same family paralyzed for life. The memoirs of the girl of the blast are as follows:

"Mom disappeared in the air and her mobile fell. I hurriedly pick it up, so nobody else would take it"

May God put some humanity in the the hearts of the people who perform these sub-human acts and may they feel the pain of all the people who feel the loss and pain of their loved ones lost combined.

May God have mercy on us and on the souls of the people who were martyred in these sub-human terrorist acts!

Love Story - A tribute

Movie Rating: 4/5
Song Rating: 5/5
Book Rating: 4/5

There are some stories and some images and some tunes which haunts us forever. One of those is "Love Story" by Erich Segal. The book itself, the movie which is closely based on book and the ever beautiful song "Love Story" with music, which has been been hauntingly covered by Andy Williams. This all put together defines what has made "love story" timeless.

On 20th Jan, 2010, Erich Segal passed away at the age of 72. He struggled and fought Parkinsons for 30 years. An action writer who wrote this love story and fought for it to be published as his agent thought it would tarnish his image as macho action screenplay writer. This inspired by a true story was so close to his heart and became his legacy. The master mind of this simple story which is perhaps the easiest and most simple reading, inspired so many to create their own master pieces in form of film, lyrics, composition and singing.

"Love Story" was made into 1970 hit film staring Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw. The movie is an artistic and musical marvel with simplistic acting by the lead actors matching simplistic beauty and dialogue of the story. The movie won Oscar that year and was nominated for 6 Oscar categories. The movie's love story theme composed by Francis Lie with lyrics written by Carl Sigman repeatedly echos throughout the movie in different styles, pace and instruments with Andy Williams providing the vocals from time to time.

The credit for this timeless tragic tale which inspired timeless movie and music goes to the writer that we have lost. His legacy would live on in the hearts of so many whom he touched and inspired through this story. Its true magic! I would end this post with his words, ""Love means never having to say you are sorry."
